How the calculation works
This shows both halves of intra-state GST together so you can read off the exact figures for your tax invoice.
- CGST
Taxable value × (Rate ÷ 2) ÷ 100 - SGST
Identical calculation — same base, same half-rate - Total payable
Taxable value + CGST + SGST
Worked example

Important points to keep in mind
- Both amounts must appear separately on the invoice — combining them as 'GST' is non-compliant.
- The combined 18% here matches what an inter-state buyer would pay as IGST.
- Report the two halves in their own columns of GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B.
Frequently asked questions
Why split GST into two parts at all?
India's GST is a dual tax: the Centre and states each levy their own portion on local consumption, so both show up on every intra-state invoice.
What rate halves apply at the 28% slab?
14% CGST plus 14% SGST. Compensation cess, where it applies, is shown additionally.
My buyer moved to another state mid-order. Now what?
Tax follows the place of supply at the time of supply. If it becomes inter-state, issue the invoice with IGST instead of CGST/SGST.
